I have an old NEC laptop (VersaPro series) that I bought from Japan; about 7 years ago. The computer gets hot at the bottom sometimes, but it hasn’t really affected its performance.
I turned into tonight and it was one for maybe 5 minutes before the screen went black and stalled. The fan was still running, so I shut it down by holding the power button down. Afterwards, I wasn’t able to turn it back on and still haven’t been able to do so.
Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks!
I turned it on again a minute ago; the fan can be heard running. That’s all; the screen is still completely blank.

you did good to get 7 years out of it. find a sledge hammer and put it out of its misery.
the boot up log might be corrupt- try restore disk,
and or reformat
I know you probably don’t want to hear this, but seven years really is a substantial amount of time to have a computer work. There are many affordable and reliable models on the market now. I suggest you try Circuit City; they always have good deals and a remarkable return service. As for your computer there is probably nothing that can be done. I have been in IT for about 12 years, and it sounds pretty much terminal. If you are really attached to it, you might try Geek Squad, but it is probably a waste of money. eBay has excellent deals if you are trying to be very economical about getting a new computer. I hope that helps!
